"Not only is Perth a friendly, cosmopolitan city with a great climate and an excellent quality of life, it also has a world-class educational system, from pre-school age right up to doctoral research."

World-class teachers and facilities; internationally-recognised qualifications; afforability; and a safe environment. The list goes on. Is it any wonder, then, that Perth, Western Australia's capital city, is such a popular study destination with Singaporeans?

Currently forming the fourth largest student population in Australia, accunting for 8.3 per cent of international students in 2004, Perth sees the majority of Singaoreans pursuing tertiary education while the rest study at college or high school.

“Perth is now well established as an Education City, currently offering courses to over 36,000 international students seeking university degrees, vocational qualifications, secondary and primary education, foundation courses, and English language skills,” said Western Australia's Premier, Dr Geoff Gallop.

He added: "It offers a unique and prestigious learning environment, allowing creativity and providing the challenge to achieve academic success and personal growth. International students have every opportunity to achieve their potential in a city famed for its friendliness."

Their father William Zeng, a 50-year-old businessman, said: “I was educated in New Zealand so can appreciate the differences. Though tough, both, financially and emotionally for my wife and me, it is well worth it. My sons are happier and healthier, both physically and mentally. The balance between sports, social and academic life is essential. The attention and personal care they receive from their enthusiastic teachers is amazing.”

Perth universities, colleges and schools have positioned themselves as leaders of international education services with a track record in teaching and research, flexible course design and a high rate of graduate employment, said Mr Mike Ryan, Executive Officer of Perth Education City.

“Not only is Perth a friendly, cosmopolitan city with a great climate and an excellent quality of life, it also has a world-class educational system, from pre-school age right up to doctoral research,” he said.

On the whole, Australia's international education industry continues to be one of the country's strongest export performers. In 2004, it earned more than A$4 billion (S$4.8 billion), with numbers growing by more than 15 per cent over the previous year. This expansion continues despite global economic uncertainty, and concerns about terrorism and security.
