THU 21 SEP 2000 22:31 SYDNEY- Argentina’s hopes of sealing
victory and confirming a ticket into the next round were dashed
by a 1-0 loss against Spain Thursday.
The first half was uneventful, with both teams playing conservatively.
Argentina came on strongly in the second half and dominating play,
but the players could not capitalise on shots at goal.
Spain scored with Erdoitza GOIKOETXEA’a conversion of a penalty
corner in the 40th minute. The Argentineans controlled the game’s
tempo from there with some threatening stickwork from AYMAR Luciana,
RIMOLDI Jorgelina and Captain Karina MASOTTA.
MASOTTA (ARG) came closest to scoring in the 45th minute but keeper
CARRION Elena (ESP) was alert to the challenge.
The Spanish defended their lead well and were clearly overjoyed
with victory when the final whistle came.
This game leaves Spain with a match in hand against Great Britain
on 22 September at 20:30. Argentina must wait for results of remaining
matches to see if it qualifies for the next round.
