SYDNEY- Mandy SMITH’s moment of individual brilliance turned
the match New Zealand’s way in their win against South Africa
on Thursday at the State Hockey Centre.
SMITH (NZL) picked up a lose ball in midfield, dazzling with her
stickwork to produce a field goal after a quick one-two with Kate
TROLOVE in the 54th minute.
The South African’s put up a gallant fight with numerous
threatening shots from Pietie COETZEE, playing her 100th international.
Captain Karen ROBERTS (RSA) was inspiring and involved in almost
all attacks but Kiwi keeper Helen CLARKE guarded her post well.
The last ten minutes were intense, with South Africa on search
of an equaliser that never came. Susan WELLS (RSA) and Tina BELL-KAKE
(NZL), both wearing no. 31 jerseys, were sent off for rough play
in the 57th and 64th minutes.
The loss dampens South Africa’s hope of moving on to the
next phase, while New Zealand shares top spot with China in Pool
D. South Africa plays China on Friday at 1830.
