SYDNEY- The Australian men’s hockey team booked its semi-final
berth on Tuesday, finishing top of Pool A after a 2-1victory over
Korea.
Korea took a surprise early lead by scoring in the eighth minute through
an impressive field goal from SONG Seung-Tae. But the Australians
again fought back to level the score by half time and then take the
lead. They made similar come-backs against India, Argentina and Spain.
The early Korean goal gave Australia a sense of urgency to press for
an equaliser. It arrived when Craig VICTORY flicked in a penalty corner
shot right on the stroke of half-time.
The second half saw penetrating runs and impressive play by James
ELMER, Stephen DAVIES, Adam COMMENS and Paul GOUDOIN. The forwards
were quick with their play and at times left the normally hard running
Koreans behind. Their hard work saw a winner through a penalty corner
conversion by Jay STACY’s power-driven shot in the 62nd minute.
Australia’s semi final opponents on Thursday will be decided
in today’s remaining matches. |
