One of Jakarta's most prominent landmarks, Monumen Nasional (affectionately known as Monas), is a 137-metre tall marble obelisk topped with a 35kg gold-coated flame. Built during Sukarno's era of fierce nationalism, it is one of many monuments representating the people's determination to achieve freedom.
