One of Jakarta's most prominent landmarks, Monumen Nasional (affectionately
known as Monas), is a 137-metre tall marble obelisk topped with
a 35kg gold-coated flame. Built during Sukarno's era of fierce
nationalism, it is one of many monuments representating the people's
determination to achieve freedom. Located in Merdeka (Freedom)
Square, the public can access a historical museum and mediation
hall. For a city bird's eye view, catch the elevator to the top
of the monument.
